Appearance: The Shelbea Hound is a medium sized dog, slightly taller than a Beagle, with a Hound like appearance.

Life Expectancy: The average life expectancy of a Shelbea Hound is 10 to 15 years.

Size: The Shelbea Hound is a medium sized dog, averaging around 35 to 40 pounds when fully grown.

Characteristics: Shelbea Hounds are active, fun loving dogs. They make friends with everyone that they meet.

Personality: Shelbea Hounds are friendly to everyone, very energetic and active, very trainable, and are very vocal. They do have a high prey drive, so must be taught at an early age to not chase cats or other small animals. Shelbea Hounds are great with other animals if raised with them.

Family Dog: Shelbea Hounds are great dogs for active families that enjoy spending lots of time outdoors.

Companionship: Shelbea Hounds make excellent companions for an active person or family.

Ears: The ears of a Shelbea Hound are set low and fairly long, but slightly shorter than a purebred Beagle.

Color: Shelbea Hounds can be any Hound color, but are usually tricolor or black and tan.

Coat: The Shelbea Hound has a smooth harsh coat, much like a Beagle's coat.

Shedding: Shelbea Hounds shed year round.

 

Grooming: Shelbea Hounds do not require much grooming. Brushing this dog a few minutes a day with a slicker brush is all they need.

Training: Shelbea Hounds require early training and socialzation, especially with small pets. They learn quickly and are eager to please.

Barking: Shelbea Hounds tend to be very vocal dogs. They have a variety of vocalizations and they love to hear themselves "talk".

Feeding: Shelbea Hounds tend to have some food sensitivities and require a high quality food fed two-three times a day to help prevent illness.

Exercise: Shelbea Hounds are a very active dog and require at least an hour of hard exercise every day.

Physical Ability: Shelbea Hounds are capable of most any physical activity.

Ear Health: Shelbea Hounds can be prone to ear infections if their ears are not cleaned regularly.

Litter Size: The average litter size of a Shelbea Hound is 5-6 puppies but can be significantly less.

History: The Shelbea Hound originated from a female Beagle/Sheltie cross and a male Beagle/Coonhound cross.
