She never eats much at any one time so I leave a small amount of dry out all the time. Her favorite time to eat is after we go to bed and then she will run in the kitchen (she runs cause she's afraid of the dark) and get a few pieces and bring them to the bedroom and then run back two or three more times. My older Malchi has very few teeth so I feed him wet in the mornings and Sophie gets just a tiny bit of it also. I try not to over feed but I also believe in letting them eat when they are hungry so that is why I leave some out all the time. All dogs are different and some tend to eat if it's there so it just depends on your dog.

Morkie breeders

Please help. I know dogs should generally not have people food and we very rarely feed our dogs any. Every once in a while they get rice or fresh baked chicken or things along those lines. I know there are things that dogs definitely should NOT have like chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, sugar, etc. The last couple of days I have been eating an apple and my dogs are going crazy trying to get to some of it so that made me wonder if apples are okay for dogs. I am not going to feed them an entire apple or anything just curious if a small piece or lick is okay? I also read that the seeds are definitely not good for them. A month ago I rescued a 8 year old Bichon/Poodle mix. She is so very sweet and unassuming. She had been moved around to and from three states and was fostered by a group in Ohio. I do however believe that she was a puppy mill breeder and does not like walking on grass at all. She doesn't mind stones or concrete. I am having a hard time house training her and she will not "tell" me when she needs to go out. I have to just take her often. Can I paper train her at this late date? She is my little shadow and I already love her.

There are 3 replies, with the last one on 8/28/2009 at 10:53 AM by sands904

Reply: It sounds like she is just a little unsure of the grass as like you said she probably wasn't ever on it before. (I am with you on the Puppy mill things...terrible people....). It seems like you are doing well with teaching her the grass is not something she needs to be afraid of. It wasn't too hard to train our little ones to go on them, but we did it as puppies and once they had that pretty consistantly they learned to go outside on walks, etc. It took a while for our male (Logan) to get the idea that he could go outside also. When we were out in the yard he would want to go inside to go potty. If she is starting to get it outside you may want to stick with that until she is rather consistant. Trying to train her to both at the same time might confuse her. Let me know how she does!

Cat and new dog

I was hoping someone could help me.. We just recently added Kota (labradane) to our family, because we didnt get him as a puppy (we think hes about 2) our cat is not liking the whole thing. All of our other dogs we got as puppies and she got to watch them all grow up and the transition was really smooth for her. Every time Kota does see the cat he barks and is curious about her. She just growls and hisses at him which only gets him more excited. I personally dont think his intentions are to hurt her as he is very gentle and is more curious as to what she is. Kota is a bit rambunctious so the cat hides in the closet and I haven't got to see her in over 2 months, she only comes out at night when Kota is in bed. Kota's intentions mean well its obvious he has not been around cats and just sees her as something new, cat just sees a HUGE dog bouncing all around her. How can I get us all to live in harmony with one another?

There are 5 replies, with the last one on 8/27/2009 at 8:53 PM by Grammy

Reply: We had a Lab/hound mix puppy at 8 weeks of age. We also have three cats. As the pup grew, it was very obvious that he just wanted to tree those cats so bad. It was his nature as a part hound. (think racoons, etc.) My cats became so worried over all of this that they stopped eating and began to lose their hair from the stress. He would chase them and tree them on the cupboards or anyplace else they could jump up. We finally gave the dog at 8 months to a couple without cats and he was a real gentleman and my cats were very happy for the peace and quiet and began to eat again and grew their hair back.

Seperation Anxieties.

I never thought I would be upset enough about being loved to ask for suggestions, but here i am.

Sophie, my 6.5 month old Chipoo is so attached to me that she cries herself hoarse if I am home and won't let her come out to be with me. If my husband or anyone tries holding her she will wiggle out of their arms and when they put her down, she will make a mad run to me and jump up on me. She has to be in the same room as I am at all times. When I feed her and leave the room, she will follow me and cry. After a few times I realized she was hungry and wanted me to go back to the kitchen, I do and she hurries and eats, the whole time stopping after a few bites to make sure that I am still there! When I am in the bathroom, I have to leave the door cracked or else she sits outside crying and barking. When we go for a walk, I don't even have to leash her because she refuses to leave my side. We live out in the middle of no where and I am trying to encourage her to explore a little ( I would like to take pictures of her chasing butterflies or something) but she won't get a foot away from me. When I let the little ones out in the mornings to potty, she will run out immediatly with Uncle Roody, but then stops at the steps of the porch and runs back to the door and waits for me. I have tried to just ignore her, but she is relentless and can last for hours. My husband has tried taking her outside on her leash or to just carry her out and let her walk, but she starts shaking and refuses to move. When she is with me, she bounces and runs around my feet and you can tell she is exhilerated to be out and about.

She is left alone with Uncle Roody all day while I am at work, and she is fine with this because she is a home body and loves to be at home. When I get home in the evenings, she jumps and cries and when I pick her up, she has to kiss me and love on me (sometimes a little over-excitedly, if that's a word)and refuses to let me put her down for a good 10-15 minutes.

HELP, I am afraid if I ever have to leave her for any reason, she will get sick. Anyone have any ideas.

There are 5 replies, with the last one on 8/27/2009 at 1:57 PM by meganstarke

Reply: Have you tried getting her a friend? I were having problems with my Lab/GSD mix probably because I have spoiled him to much! He would whine for hours after I left for work and when I would get home he was anxious, jumping, barking crying, all of it! I was pretty worried about him so we discusses getting another dog and it is working great! He is very attentive and keeps his eye on her. I think it works best when the new one is a puppy of the same breed or size and definatly of the opposite sex. She follows him around and keeps him busy and now when I come home he runs up sits, gets a pet and is off again. We have only had her a few short days!! Seperation anxiety can take weeks or months to cure and really it's caused by dogs having a need to be part of a pack. Getting a new addition may also help warm her up to your husband because when he is with the new puppy your dog will want to same attention! They will be best of friends in a few weeks and it will take a lot of pressure of you. You will have to control their interactions until the sizes are evened up which shouldn't take to long, only a matter of weeks. Both puppies will play rough at times and may cry or yelp if the other plays to rough. It will be up to you to keep things from getting out of hand if one tries to bully the other but with gentle guidance you should have two dogs that will be the best of friends. The vet suggested the pill Capstar but I have really read a lot of negative stuff on little dogs and this medicine, so we have decided against it. They are driving her (and us) crazy. I use the flea comb on her several times a day and she hates it. She has very sensitive skin and no matter how gentle I am, she acts like it hurts. I just don't know what else to do about it.

I did buy her a feathery little toy, she still prefers the real thing! Her dad thinks in a previous life she was a hunter because of her need to dig huge holes, her love of feathers and her need to gnaw on his fingers. Needless to say, she has him wrapped around her paw.

whats the difference?

Can anyone tell me if my dog is an outside or inside breed? I've been told he is an inside dog, is this true?

There are 2 replies, with the last one on 7/27/2009 at 9:01 PM by sycadoog

Reply: I have to agree completly. It all comes down to what is best for you and your dog. We have had big dogs and little dogs and all have been and will be inside dogs. It is all about makeing sure that you dog gets enough exercise and training to behave inside.
A shedder will need more grooming if inside and a thin coated dog will need more protection if outside but there are people here in Mi that have small little 10-15 lb dogs that stay outside all the time even in winter. They are provided with a quality shelter and a heated place to stay in the bitter cold. So what ever works for you is what is right even if others don't agree.
My sister has a 70 lb dog that would not last one hour outside in the winter and she thinks she is a little lap dog if that helps you to decide.

how to get friends

this isnt about dogs but when i login i see something that says "friends" i was just wondering how to ask people to be your friend. any advice would help, thanks!

There are 2 replies, with the last one on 7/25/2009 at 2:56 PM by bman

Reply: ok thanks ill try

Our 5 Month Old German Shepherd Mix

My husband and I adopted a German Shepherd mix Lance from our local shelter about 2.5 months ago. We are not sure what he is mixed with but have had some comments that it may be a collie. (More opinions welcome :).

We have been feeding him large breed food as our vet instructed. He is about 35lbs now but hasn't appeared to be growing as fast lately. I am curious about how big he may get and if we should continue with the large breed food. We have to take him in to get weighed again next month to get the right heartworm meds for him, so I can check with the vet then. I am just wondering what others think in the meantime.

Thanks!!

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 7/15/2009 at 1:24 PM by bman

Reply: if i were you i would feed the dog medium breed dog food untill you find out for sure but i only have little dogs though sooooo here is a pic of one of my little dogs www.designermixes.org/Dogs/Bio.aspx?Dog=1131 and obviously he is muuuuch smaller than most dogs

Would like suggestions....

I have a chi male and a chipoo female. I do not breed any dog intentionally, however, I was keeping this particular female to breed but not until she was 2 years old. My dilema....Angelbaby went into her first heat and I kept her crated away from my male as she was going nuts trying to get at her. I took every precaution except one. I left my teenage stepdaughter at home with them one day for a couple of hours and with strict instructions, she let them out together and then called and said "I think they got stuck"....After the initial panic and anger, I calmed down as there was nothing I could do then obviously. Well, Angelbaby is only 9 months, almost 10 and this is the worst possible thing in my opinion because she is not even fully grown yet, bones and mind....I separated them once again however the damage had been done. This was 4 weeks ago. She is pregnant and all is ok now, but I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this occur so young in a toy poodle/chi mix dog? Chi's usually have birthing issues anyway due to thier size, and this is making me sick with worry. Although there will be a vet on call, I have experience in breeding, but that does not stop me from being terrified. Never has this occurred before and it will never again, but how do I deal with all the scarey what if's???? Thanks for any suggestions.

There are 3 replies, with the last one on 7/15/2009 at 1:09 PM by bman

Reply: i have no idea what to do but if it was me i would make sure that she has very easy living like haveing food for her 24/7 good luck!

Puppy Fluff

Ok, my 2 1/2 month old Pugshire (pug/yorkie) has a good coat of puppy fluff (or that's what I call it anyway). I was wondering if anyone who had a pug or yorkie mix had a puppy that had this fluffy coat, and if it stayed or fell out. He has been shedding, but nothing like our lab. If it falls out is it good to help it along and get him shaved? And if it stays in when do I start grooming? I brush him a lot...

Breed ID

How can I find out what breed my dog is?
He was a rescue and I have no history on him. By popular opinion he might be a Lhasa-Poo. I'd like to know for sure and I've heard of some test that might be available... Anyone have info on this? I'm looking for specifics: what tests are available & where, how reliable are they and what's the cost.
Thanks! :)

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 7/30/2008 at 8:57 PM by sands904

Reply: Welcome! I don't know much about the specifics but our vet said she got her Golden Retriever's pups tested after she was found with the neighbors dog to see if they were purebred or not and it cost about $1000 for 8 pups. Check out the profile for lucylatte (http://www.designermixes.org/Members/Profile.aspx?Member=109) she had her dog genetically tested. Maybe she could give you some advice. FYI - you can always post his pictures under 'Unknown Mix' for other's to see. It wouldn't be official but they may have some ideas as well.

Good Luck with your venture and let us know what you find out!
