The silliness of a pup

When I wake up in the early a.m. to take my Perry to relieve himself, I first leave him in his crate in my bedroom and go relieve myself. Okay, so when he goes, it's okay, but when I go, he totally has the right to start crying when I leave the room? He's such a funny puppy; never likes to be left alone, he starts crying when I put my hand on the doorknob. When he gives up, he lets out a large whine that slowly goes down an octave, and his head falls on his paws. Ah, Perry!

Not to worry. It is perfectly natural and of course you find it cute at this puppy stage. It should soon stop when he realises that you are coming back. However if it doesn't then you should start ignoring him. Do the standard three things recommended by most behaviourists - do not speak, look at him directly or touch him. If you ignore any of these three things then you are rewarding him for really unwanted behaviour. Do not worry about it at the moment, but just bear it in mind that soon you may have to be a little firmer with him. We all love pups' funny little ways, and it is part of the pleasure of having a dog, but we must eradicate them before too long so that they don't become a nuisance.
