Up to Now -Suburbia and Rural Life

by Belusky on 9/16/2010 at 6:13 AM in A Day in the life of Fraggle

When Fraggle was 10 months old, we upped and moved from suburbia to the rural life. I decided to train Fraggle with the animals as where we were living had sheep, horses, goats and chickens.

Fraggle quickly learnt to be mindful of the horses, after my big gelding warned her in no uncertain words to mind her distance. The goats warned her off with their horns, so she learnt to respect them too. The chickens and sheep were the hardest. When either ran away, Fraggle would run after them and of course scare them.

By the time we moved from this property, Fraggle was also good with the chickens, but would constantly try and herd the sheep and if they didnt do what she wanted them to do she would snap at them.

One close shave later and we abandoned the idea of teaching her to work with sheep for now.

Another problem we had while out country, was that she so closely resembles a dingo that we had to constantly know where she was at all times. We ended up decking her out in a bright collar, and a jacket most of the time, so she wouldnt get shot on sight.

The Start of it all

by Belusky on 9/14/2010 at 11:35 PM in First Post

On the 6th March 2009, three puppies were born to a gorgeous, black and fawn Belgian Malinois bitch. These three pups were the start of the Belusky- Belgian Shepherd x Siberian Husky.

The pups were born looking pretty much like pugs. But by the time they were six weeks old their snouts had grown into the typical Malinois snout.

The pups basically looked like miniature versions of their mother for the first seven weeks of their lives, apart from having different markings on their legs and chest.

We lost one pup due to a tragic accident and were left with the two-Tiva (pronounced ZeeVah) and Fraggle Rocks. I had begun training the pups from the second they had opened their eyes and could hear me. At first it was training them to be handled for baths, vet visits, grooming etc. Then when they were comfortably eating soft foods etc, I began actual training.

I was amazed at how quickly they learnt, within an hour both pups would sit with the simple "Fraggle sit" They were vaccinated and wormed etc, and i advertised them for sale. Tiva sold and went to begin her training for being a security guard! My latest news on Tiva was that she stood about 45cm tall, and looked like a blond German shepherd only smaller.

Fraggle ended up being retained by my partner, and has become a guard dog, best friend and the light of our eyes. Fraggle is still very trainable, i taught her to pray (her version of beg) in the space of half an hour, and her high level of intelligence amazes me. She is going through the stage of "ummm no not listening to you" but is brought back with a simple ignore her and then fuss up and re-command.

Fraggle's dam - Tutone Astara, unfortunately was PTS on March 4th 2010, due to recurring problems with injuries she received by her abusive previous owner. Fraggle is her legacy, and oh what a legacy. I look forward to updating everyone on the life of Fraggle, legacy of Tara.
