History: The American Bandog Mastiff is a breed of dog in the Molosser group. The "Bandogge" is a non-specific name of any Bulldog class Mastiff breed.
Technically speaking, the Bandog Mastiff is not a "pure bred" breed. The breed exists today thanks to the dedication of two American mastiff breeders. In the 1960s, John Swinford, an American veterinarian decided to breed the "ultimate" guardian dog. He consistently crossed a male American pit bull terrier with a large, strong Neapolitan mastiff female. Joe Lucero, another American mastiff breeder also had a hand in the evolution of this breed. He specifically refers to his dogs as American Bandog Mastiffs. The cross can be any kind of Bull dog ( be it American Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier etc etc crossed with any type of Mastiff ( be it Neopolitan Mastiff, bullmastiff, Old English Mastiff )
